Toys Information

What wood is used in your products?

Toy manufacturers use wood from controlled and sustainable forestries and most toys are made of Beech and Rubber wood from 'Gum trees' which have come to the end of their Rubber producing years. Beech, Oak, Sycamore (Maple) and Ash are also frequently used. Lighter timber, eg Pine and Spruce, is traditionally used for boxes (as in Mikado sets) and Shut The Box Games. Shisham is Indian Rosewood from controled forestries, used in the manufacturing of mostly furniture and solitaire boards.
Plywood and mdf are also frequently used in toy manufacturing. Using these wood products has many advantages and both types of wood can be finished to a high standard. The mdf used in toymaking has to meet strict standards.

What is the best way to look after my wooden toy or game?

Avoid dropping it! Wooden toys can be easily damaged by being stepped upon, thrown around or dropped. Children need to learn that a wooden toy is not a plastic thing, which might survive mis-treatment.

Maintenance of 'larger' toys & games like Bagatelle, Rocking Horses, Shove Ha'Penny etc. consists of applying a coat of wax, now and then when needed. You can use solid or liquid wax, coloured or natural, but we do not recommend the use of aerosol products, which contain silicon and dubious gasses. Just be careful when there are little ones around and always read instructions before waxing.

Unpainted toys can also be treated with linseed oil or Danish oil. You can apply this type of oil also to toys and games which have been coloured with special plant based child-friendly dyes. This is a safe and child-friendly method of protecting and preserving the wooden parts, an oil treated toy is also less affected when used in damp conditions.

Wood can expand and shrink, which sometimes causes friction between certain parts. If you notice that a toy has squeaky wheels for instance, a few drops of oil will solve the problem immediately.
You may be aware that centrally heated rooms can have a destructive effect on wooden furniture. The same accounts for wooden toys; they may split or warp in a dry and warm environment.
And please, also be careful leaving wooden toys out in the rain or in a damp environment, would you leave your dining table out in the rain?

Why are some toys not suitable for young kids?

Toys and Games sold only to adult collectors over 14 years of age are designed and manufactured in an old fashioned way and do not comply with current Toy Safety Legislation.
Nostalgic tinplate products inevitably will have sharp edges, as some of us may remember from their childhood.
Toypost is in the traditional toys business and we feel that we should offer these collector's items, as long as we make it absolutely clear that they are not offered as toys, but are featured as part of our collection of interesting artifacts.
Buyers of these toys usually show common sense and under no circumstance operate these toys near children.

My tinplate toy looks a bit rough, why is that?

Small surface scratches, surface oxidation and paintwork touch-ups on tinplate toys are quite common. The way these type of toys roll off the assembly line is frequently the cause of small blemishes, which may be touched up by a worker before the product leaves the toy factory.
This has been common practise for over a century of tinplate toy manufacturing.
Because the quality of the finish is beyond our control, we have a disclaimer in our terms and conditions, not accepting requests for refunds and postage costs for this reason.

Is the paint child safe?

We can assure you that Toypost and its suppliers distribute toys which have passed stringent tests. These tests are repeated over a period of time, other new tests are also applied.
The 'soak' test for instance will show up if materials used in a certain toy are safe for babies and young children if they have the toys in their mouths for a certain amount of time. All dyes, colour paints and finishing coats, including oils or waxes have to be non-toxic and must conform to CE EN-71 and ASTM D-4236 standards. Toys are routinely and frequently checked on safety/paint quality etc. by trading standards.

Are your toys tested and child safe?

Toys intended to be used by children under 14 years of age* have a certficate of safety, passing stringent tests.
If a child's toy fails a test it has to be re-designed.
Tests are constantly held and for safety reasons products are tested more and more in different ways. A new programme will perform a drop-test on toys for under 3 year olds. It is dropped on a hard surface from appr. 75cm. If a part brakes off which could be swallowed by a child, it will fail the test.
If a product fails a test whilst it has already been sold for some time, a re-call programme will be launched and you will most likely come across a media story concerning this.
No imported toy/game is allowed to be sold within the EU without a test certificate* Copies of these certificates are available, but we have to forward a request to the supplier/manufacturer.
* Except Marbles.

Wholesale and large orders

Do you do wholesale or bulk orders?

Toypost is primarily an online direct-sales retail shop, we are NOT a wholesaler.
We do apply discounts for larger orders of a single item.
When ordering a quantity of a low price item, discount may be available from £150.
Discount is applied before VAT and may not include delivery.
Payment is needed in advance of dispatch.

Can I order large quantities?

If you wish to order online a quantity of 10 or more of a single item, contact us first to check stock levels.

Catalogue, Images copyright

Can you send me a catalogue?

No we can't, because we do not have one.
As products' prices frequently change these days, our websites are also frequently updated. It is for that reason that we cannot produce an up to date printed catalogue. So sorry, No Catalogue :-(

Can I use your images?

Only after asking us for permission.
We frequently come across abuse of our copyright, which is called 'copyright infringement'.
If we spot the use of, or part-use of one of our images on eg. Ebay, we will immediately notify the offender and Ebay, infringement is a serious offence.
Copyright is protection provided by the law to the authors of “original works of authorship.
By virtue of the Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works, works are protected in all 160 countries that are party to the Convention, as well as various other laws such as the US copyright act.

Prices - VAT - Tax

Are your prices competitive?

We guarantee to match a lower price :-)
You've seen the same product for a lower price somewhere else! That is always possible with internet based offers, prices frequently change, sometimes a few times each day!
Show us where you have seen the offer and we will match that price, as long as the offer is genuine, the particular item is available from stock and postage costs are taken into consideration.
Obviously we cannot match a price if you live, for instance, in the USA and have seen the same item for sale in the USA with US shipping costs, so our price match only applies to UK mainland based trade.

Do I have to pay VAT or import duties?

All our prices include vat unless mentioned otherwise. UK customers and European Union customers pay vat over the chosen products.
Non European Union, Channel Islands, Isle of Man etc + other overseas customers do not pay VAT (value added tax). Customers may need to comply with their country's customs and excise duties. We cannot be held responsible when certain import duties are applied to purchased goods from this website.

Our VAT registration nr. is 846 2886 85

Free Shipping on eBay, Amazon

Why do you offer free shipping on eBay, Amazon, Play.com but not on Toypost.co.uk?

Products sold on eBay, Amazon, Play.com etc. are offered with Free Postage and Packaging.
On Play.com it is required that products have free postage.
Upon closer inspection, you will find that prices have packaging and postage costs built in.

So... why no free postage on toypost.co.uk direct sales?
That is because most Toypost-direct customers buy more than 2 items in their order placed with Toypost.co.uk. If they would buy more than 2 items with the postage included in the free postage price, the total price would be too high.

Example:
Our average UK mainland postage and packaging rate is £1.99 (for items under 4kg).
If an item sells on eBay/Amazon for £11.99, it would sell on Toypost for £10.00. Buy 3 of them om eBay/Amazon and you pay £38.97 (3 x £11.99), on Toypost £31.99 (3 x £10.00 + £1.99).
That is over 17% less, not taken into account the frequent special discount promotions offered on the Toypost.co.uk website.
