Noah's Ark

The Noah's Ark Toy traditionally is a hand made wooden toy with hand carved and hand painted animals. Noah's Ark toys are inspired by the biblical story and were popular at the end of the 18th century in Germany and in Victorian times. The carved wooden animals and mr Noah and mrs Noah (Naamah) wife are stored inside the ark. The Sunday tradition was that children were allowed to play inside with the Ark Toy. The educational value of playing with the Ark is without a shadow of doubt very high, children always show an interest in the Bible story of the Ark of Noah, whether or not it actually happened and learn about the various animals which come with Noah's Ark play sets. Noah's Arks are often given as a Christening present and quite often become a starting point to a collection, expanding the range of animals over the years to come. Many examples of antique Noah's arks can be found in musea all over the world. Here in England an 1810 German Noah's ark toy example is on display at the Victoria and Albert Museum of Childhood, London
